August is a month filled with significant dates in history for Hawai`i, some of them of a political nature starting with August 12, 1898 when the U.S. annexed Hawai`i. Then, on August 21, 1959 Hawai`i became the 50th state. On that same day in 1908 Waimea paniolo Ikua Purdy, Eben “Rawhide Ben” Low and Archie Kaaua won top awards at the world-famous Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo in Wyoming, bringing home first, third and sixth places. Also in August, in 1911, 21-year-old Duke Kahanamoku broke the 100-yard freestyle world record by 4.6 seconds. A year later, at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, Duke won a gold medal in the 100 and a silver in the 4x200 meter relay. Various other August dates mark the opening of Queens Hospital and Tripler General Hospital on Oahu, as well as the opening of the Ala Moana Shopping Center. Quite an eclectic collection of “firsts” for Hawai`i.

Waikoloa Beach Resort led the way in condominium sales in July, recording six closings. The units ranged in price from $945,000 to $2.1M, or an average of 98.67% of the Sale/Current price. They averaged 57 days on the market, with the price per square foot averaging $1,058.
