DID YOU KNOW?
King Kamehameha I, also known as Kamehameha the Great, was a legendary warrior, diplomat, and visionary leader. Born in North Kohala around 1758, he united the warring Hawaiian islands into a single royal kingdom by 1810. Originally named Paiʻea, he was hidden away during his early years to protect him from other chiefs who might see him as a threat. Once he joined the royal court, he received elite training in warfare, history, and navigation. He was given the name Kamehameha, meaning "The Lonely One", after overturning the Naha Stone—a massive boulder weighing several tons. Legend dictated that whoever moved the stone would rule all of Hawaiʻi. Kamehameha began his campaign to unite the islands under his rule in 1782, and in 1810, the last of the independent islands, Kauai, was conquered. Kamehameha went on to govern and protect his people, while also building a thriving economy. He died in 1819, and today he is commemorated each June 11 during King Kamehameha Day, a public state holiday in Hawaiʻi where his iconic statues are draped with elaborate, fresh flower lei and parades are held.

MAUNA KEA EVENTS
June 11 is Kamehameha Day, and celebrations surrounding this day honor the legacy of King Kamehameha, unifier of the Hawaiian islands. Hawai`i Island is where Kamehameha was born; it was the seat of his kingdom and where he spent the last years of his life. This year, Kona’s 154th Annual King Kamehameha Day Celebration Parade is being held on Saturday, June 6, 9 .m. along Ali`i Drive. Adorned in the flowers and colors of the Hawaiian Islands, regal pāʻū riders on horseback will represent each of the eight islands, led by the Parade’s Pā`u Queen. The floral parade will also feature hula hālau, community floats, and more! After the parade, Huliheʻe Palace will host the annual Hoʻolauleʻa for music, art, and performances. The celebration continues in Kohala, where Kamehameha was born. Kohala always celebrates Kamehameha on the holiday - June 11 – which is also a state holiday. As the king's birthplace, North Kohala plays a very special role in the celebration. The original statue of King Kamehameha I, which was once thought lost at the bottom of the sea, has stood proudly in North Kohala since 1912. This year, statue decoration ceremonies will begin at 5:30 am with Protocol, Royal Procession, hula halau performances, and receiving the 20 ft. lei, culminating with the King's statue in Kapa'au being draped with lei at 9 am. Ceremonies include participation by the Royal Order of Kamehameha, members of the Hawaiian Civic Club and Ka'ahumanu Society. From 9:00-10:00 am, the colorful floral parade will take place, featuring traditional Hawaiian pa'u riders and honorees. Hoʻolauleʻa festivities will also be held in Kapaʻau's King Kamehameha Park, featuring live Hawaiian music.
