DID YOU KNOW?
May Day is Lei Day in Hawai`i! May Day celebrations in Hawai`i got their start in 1928 when a writer from Oklahoma joined forces with another Hawaii newspaper writer and came up with the idea of honoring the tradition of the lei. On May 1, 1928, the first Lei Day was held on Oahu in the lobby of Bank of Hawai`i and featured a lei competition featuring the flowers and colors of the islands as designated in 1923 by Hawaiʻi’s Territorial Legislature. Ever since this inaugural lei competition in 1928, Hawai`i continues to celebrate May Day with lei competitions, May Day courts, mele, and hula. Keep an ear out for May Day programs around the island. Several of the shopping centers in Kona and on the Kohala Coast are holding special events. The Waikoloa Beach Resort held a lei-making event with the goal of creating a 5-mile-long lei.

MAUNA LANI EVENTS
After a three-year pandemic pause, Honoka‘a Western Week is riding into town May 19-29 to celebrate the community’s paniolo heritage. There will be a roundup of friendly competitions, ‘ono food, music, dancing, storytelling, keiki games, and Hāmākua’s special breed of cowboy culture. Grand Marshalls for this yearʻs parade on Saturday, May 20, are long-time Hāmākua and paniolo people, Waltham and Bernadette Johansen. The parade segues into a Block Party which includes a Saloon Girls and Cowboys Got Talent Contest, along with food trucks, vendor booths, and boot-stompin’ music by the Saddle Road Band. The ever-popular and lip-licking Portuguese Bean Soup Contest returns on Tuesday, May 23, at Ahualoa Family Farms Mac Nut Factory. New this year, is the Smoke Meat Contest. Honoka`a Western Week will also hold a Silent Auction as a virtual online event, from May 19-29. Over the last three years, funds raised by the Silent Auction have helped connect the island community of today with its agricultural and paniolo roots, and support scholarships for local youth. The bidding site will open Friday, May 19 at 7 p.m. and close on May 29 at 7 p.m. Except for a nominal charge for rodeo admission, events are free, and everyone is encouraged to join in the fun. Collectible HWW buttons will be available to purchase for $5 as a show of support, as well as “insurance.” Although buttons are not required for admission, attendees receive fair warning that those without buttons at the Block Party risk being thrown into the hoosegow by roving sheriffs. (All in good fun). For more information, honokaawesternweek.org.
