Featured Restaurant: Chefs & Table

Chefs & Table is not your typical restaurant, but it is an opportunity to experience a chef-driven pop-up dinner; a place to learn about new products or kitchen skills, attend seminars and pick up on fresh local artisan products. Each month, Chefs & Table brings in a chef, sometimes a locally-based chef and sometimes a chef from out of state, who will offer a dining experience. With its limited seating and intimate atmosphere, diners are able to enjoy personalized service and engage with the chefs. Chefs & Table is located in the Hale Kui Plaza (former location of The Spoon Shop), 73-4976 Kamanu St Ste 105 Kailua-Kona, HI 96740. It has recently opened its retail shop which stocks top-quality cookware, table settings, glassware, sustainable disposables, and more. Featured Activities: Make Portuguese Sweetbread

Each Thursday, the Kona Historical Society in Kealakekua offers an engaging, hands-on bread baking demonstration using its outdoor Portuguese bread oven. A team of dedicated breadbaking volunteers prepare the Portuguese Sweetbread dough. The community is invited to attend between 10 a.m. and noon to participate in rolling and shaping the dough. Then the bread is put into the large, wood-fired stone oven, or forno, to bake. At 1 p.m. the bread is taken out of the oven and sold to a lineup of eager customers. The bread baking is a celebration of the Portuguese culture and this weekly event is the perfect time to learn about the people who came from the Azores and Madeira to work the sugar cane plantations and whose descendents went on to become cattle ranchers, dairy farmers and an integral part of Hawai`iʻs culture.
