Featured Restaurant: Brown’s Beach House

If you’re looking for a tasty, elegant, open-air dining experience look no further than the Brown’s Beach House restaurant at The Fairmont Orchid in Mauna Lani Resort. Its Chef de Cuisine, Junior Ulep, is a celebrated Hawaii-based chef. A native of Oahu’s North Shore, Ulep is known for his passionate commitment to using fresh, locally sourced Hawaiian ingredients and connecting them to the islands’ culinary traditions in his dishes. He has held leadership roles at other high-profile resorts, including Meridia at Westin Hapuna Beach Resort and Manta at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel.
Open daily, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., the menu includes a wide range of favorites all of which feature island ingredients. Appetizers include a very tasty Poisson Cru using Abalone & Kanpachi and a Crispy Pork Belly; you’ll want to try the Baby Beet & Burrata salad and for dinner you can’t go wrong with a Ti Leaf Wrapped Kanpachi or the Lobster Agnolotti. For dessert, indulge in ice creams and sorbets and a few select desserts, all using island sourced ingredients.

Reservations for this Kohala Coast restaurant are recommended. Call The Fairmont; 808-885-2000.

Featured Activity: Kona Boys

If you’ve never paddled an outrigger canoe, but always wanted to, and are a lover of the ocean and the Hawaiian culture, you might want to check out the historic tour of Kailua Bay with Kona Boys. This long-time ocean adventure company, located in both Kealakekua and Kailua-Kona, offers opportunities to explore the ocean via outrigger canoe paddles and the rental of stand-up paddle boards, snorkel equipment and surf boards. Experienced and knowledgeable, the staff will help you to decide what equipment would work best for you and provide excellent tips on best places along the Kona-Kohala Coast to get into the water. But, back to paddling. Kona Boys have paddling excursions which start off Kamakahonu beach with you learning the basics of outrigger canoe paddling. Then, you move into Kailua Bay, where your guide will share some of the areas rich history and watch for the antics of the often-present Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins. This is the perfect way to learn about paddling while seeing Kona from an ocean perspective. For more about this excursion and all of Kona Boys tours, visit KonaBoys.com or call 808.328.1234.
