Featured Activity: Kalōpā Nature Trail

Located in the Kalōpā State Recreation Area, the Kalōpā Nature Trail is an easy .7-mile loop trail through a native `ohi`a forest at a 2,000 foot elevation. Besides old growth `ohi`a trees, smaller native forest trees, shrubs and ferns make up the forestʻs understory. The trail is open daily, 7:00am to 8:00pm. In addition to the trail, the recreation area includes lodging and picnicking opportunities. The recreation area and trail are located on the Hamakua Coast, at the end of Kalopa Road, about 3 miles inland from Mamalahoa Highway (Hwy 19), 5 miles southeast of Honoka`a. This is a great place to take the family for the day, then stop at Tex’s Drive-In for a fresh malasada on your way home!
