DID YOU KNOW?
Hawaiian land snails, or Kāhuli, are considered one of the jewels of Hawai’i’s forests. In Hawaiian culture, the Kāhuli have significant roles in mele, hula, and oli. They are symbols of romance and omens. Governor Josh Green proclaimed 2023 as the Year of the Kāhuli and selected nine snails to represent each of the Hawaiian Islands as their designated state kahuli, or snail. Each island was matched to a snail that represents its distinctive flora and fauna. Hawai‘i Island’s snail is the Hini hini kua mauna (Succinea konaensis). The name, which translates to "snail of the mountain's back," reflects the snail's habitat and its connection to the island's landscape, particularly the volcanic mountains.

Learn about one of the fascinating facets of Hawai`i’s bio culture at the Waikōloa Dry Forest Preserveʻs talk story on September 19 with David Sischo, a wildlife biologist specializing in the conservation of rare and endangered terrestrial mollusks from the Hawaiian and Mariana Islands. He will focus on the Kāhuli, Hawai’i’s endemic, colorful tree mollusk. They are unique among the world's snails for their extraordinary evolutionary diversity; over 750 species once existed, and their deep cultural significance as the "singing snails" of Hawaiian forests, featured in mele (song), moʻolelo (story), and hula. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and the gates to the preserve, located on Quarry Road in Waikoloa, open at 5 p.m. Talks are free and open to the public. Pupus and refreshments will be provided.
