DID YOU KNOW?
History shows that Hawai`i‘s first printing press arrived in October 1813 with one of the first groups of missionaries to the islands. It was set up in a grass-roofed house in Honolulu by Elisha Loomis, the mission’s printer. The first printed sheet was a ceremonial broadside for the king, but it was primarily used for religious and educational purposes, to print primers, books, tracts, and, later, the first newspapers in the native language. The arrival and use of the printing press was a pivotal moment, leading to the creation of the written Hawaiian language, the development of an early education system, and the documentation of Hawaiian history and culture.
