DID YOU KNOW?
The "Law of the Splintered Paddle" (Kānāwai Māmalahoe) is the first written law of the Kingdom of Hawai`i and was established by King Kamehameha I. It protects the vulnerable, stating that elderly people, women, and children should be free to travel and rest by the roadside without fear of harm. The law came about when Kamehameha, as a young chief, led an attack on a fishing village. While chasing the fishermen, he was injured and nearly killed when his foot became caught in a lava crevice, and a fisherman struck him with a paddle, which splintered. The incident served as a harsh lesson for Kamehameha about the importance of respecting the rights of commoners and the potential for violence against the innocent. It's a symbol of servant leadership, emphasizing caring for one's people, upholding principles, and taking responsibility for those one serves with love and respect.
