Featured Activity: Oban Festivals

Summer is the time of Obon festivals feature Bon Odori dances, a traditional Japanese folk dance. These festivals are a community event where people gather to honor their ancestors, celebrate life, and enjoy music and dance.
Beginning in May and running through mid-September, these festivals are open to the public and are a way for the community to come together and celebrate Japanese culture.
The main attraction of Obon festivals is the Bon Odori, a folk dance where participants form a circle and dance, accompanied by taiko drums, traditional instruments, and songs. Many festivals also feature food vendors, craft fairs, and other cultural activities. In West Hawai`i, these festivals are often held at Buddhist temples or community centers. See the schedule of festivals for the one nearest you.
