Best Local Food in Kona: Dan’s Favorite Big Island Grill Spot
by Dan Polimino

One of the questions I’m asked most often—whether I’m meeting clients, filming around town, or just running errands—is this: “Dan, where do you like to eat?” With so many incredible local flavors here in Kona, it’s a fair question… and today I’m sharing one of my longtime go-to spots.

If you’ve browsed our website, you may have already discovered the Island Fun page —a curated list of my favorite restaurants and activities across the Big Island. It’s a great resource if you’re planning a visit or considering a move. But if you prefer a personal recommendation, let me introduce you to a place I’ve loved for over a decade: Big Island Grill.

I’ve been coming to Big Island Grill for roughly 10–15 years. Before COVID, they served breakfast, lunch, and dinner. During the shutdown, they shifted to a drive-thru model, and when restaurants reopened, they returned with a more limited schedule. Today, they’re open for breakfast and lunch only—but trust me, the food is still every bit as good.

This spot serves hearty, local-style plate lunches and comfort food with plenty of island flair. My personal favorite? The fish sandwich. I try other dishes from time to time, but I always come back to that one. My wife swears by the Chinese chicken salad with purple sweet potato, and the menu is full of variety—from omelets and perfectly crispy bacon at breakfast to occasional specials like prime rib.

Is the atmosphere fancy? Not really. There’s no waterfront view, and the inside has more of a classic diner feel—think local Denny’s. But what Big Island Grill lacks in scenery, it more than makes up for in flavor and kindness. The staff is warm, welcoming, and always ready with a smile.

So if you’re in Kona and you spot Big Island Grill, stop in and give it a try. I think you’ll end up telling me what so many others have: “Dan, you were right—this place is great.”

And of course, if you ever need help buying, selling, or investing in real estate here on the Big Island, the Hawaii Team is always here for you. Feel free to reach out anytime at 808-987-3306.
