ABOUT KONA HILLS ESTATES
Kona Hills Estates is a gated community located on the slopes of Hualālai mountain, just south of the Kona International Airport. The neighborhood is intimate, with less than 50 custom-designed homes, each situated on a one-acre parcel. There are outstanding views of the coastline and its elevation is ideal for enjoying Kona’s sunny weather and island breezes.
ABOUT HUALALAI VISTAS
Your neighborhood sits on the slopes of Hualālai, one of five major volcanoes that created this Island of Hawaiʻi. It has not erupted since 1800, but is still considered "active."
DID YOU KNOW?
Cowboys, or paniolo in Hawaiian, first arrived in Hawai`i in 1832. These “vaqueros” were brought to Hawai`i Island by King Kamehameha III from Alta, California (then part of Mexico) to help manage the wild cattle herds and train Native Hawaiians in horsemanship. The cattle were brought to Hawai`i in 1793 by British navigator George Vancouver as a gift to King Kamehameha I, who saw the potential for these animals in Hawaii’s lush, fertile lands. However, with no natural predators, the cattle quickly multiplied and roamed freely throughout the islands until they began to pose a problem for the islands’ ecosystems. This is when the vaqueros stepped in, playing a crucial role in teaching Hawaiians the art of cattle ranching. They introduced lariats, saddles, and other essential tools and techniques for handling cattle. The Hawaiians, in turn, adapted these methods to suit their unique environment and needs. This cultural exchange laid the foundation for what would become the Paniolo way of life. The term "paniolo," the Hawaiian word for cowboy, is believed to be derived from the Spanish word "español," meaning Spanish or Spaniard, reflecting the vaqueros' Spanish language.
