Hawai`i is filled with culture, and every month there is a celebration of one or more ethnicities. In February, the Chinese welcome the Lunar New Year - a new year based on lunar calendars. In China, the new year is a national holiday. Here in Hawai`i, we commemorate the start of the Lunar New Year with special foods and exhibitions of Lion Dancers, who are invited to visit restaurants and businesses to bless the establishments. Each year features one of the animals of the Chinese zodiac. In 2026 Chinese New Year falls on Tuesday, February 17th, starting a year of the Fire Horse, a sign which symbolizes intense energy, passion, transformation, and unstoppable momentum.
