History tells us that on January 18, 1778, the English explorer Captain James Cook became the first European to travel to the Hawaiian Islands when he sailed past the island of Oahu. Two days later, he landed at Waimea on the island of Kauai and named the island group the Sandwich Islands, in honor of John Montague, who was the Earl of Sandwich and one of his patrons. This was his first voyage, which included stops in the Hawaiian Islands. A year later, he dropped anchor in Kealakekua Bay on the Island of Hawai`i. Kealakekua Bay was considered the sacred harbor of Lono, the fertility god of the Hawaiians, and at the time of Cook’s arrival, the locals were engaged in a festival dedicated to Lono. Cook and his compatriots were welcomed as gods and, for the next month, exploited the Hawaiians’ goodwill. After one of the crewmembers died, exposing the Europeans as mere mortals, relations became strained. On February 4, 1779, the British ships sailed from Kealakekua Bay, but rough seas damaged the foremast of the Resolution, and after only a week at sea, the expedition was forced to return to Kealakekua Bay, where they were not welcomed, and subsequent encounters between the ship crews and Hawaiians resulted in deaths on both sides, including Cook’s.
NOVEMBER 2025 STATS
While there were no sales in October or November, Mauna Kea Resort recorded one home sale in September for $10.25M - 97.6% of the Sale/Current Price. On the market for 129 days, the home’s price per square foot, land and building, was $3,245.
There were no sales in November. One condominium sale was recorded in Mauna Kea Resort in October for 100% of the Sale/Current price or $9.3M. The unit was on the market for zero days and the price per square foot was $3,465.

EVENTS
The annual Waimea Cherry Blossom Festival is a popular event, and this year will be held on Saturday, February 7, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Waimea’s Church Row Park and Parker Ranch Center. It’s packed with hands-on Japanese and multi-cultural activities and performances, just a few of the activities are bonsai demonstrations, hands-on mochi pounding, sake tasting, bon dancing, traditional tea ceremonies, food demonstrations by local chefs, broke da' mouth food prepared by local organizations, loads of craft vendors, and viewing of the blooming cherry trees. Performances can be enjoyed by festival goers at multiple venues, which are identified by pink festival banners. Roberts Hawaii will provide a free transportation shuttle between Church Row Park and Parker Ranch Center, though walking is encouraged.
