DID YOU KNOW?
Hula fans won’t want to miss the activities and excitement generated by the annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, scheduled for April 5 to 11 in Hilo at the Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium and surrounding area. The central purpose of the Festival is the perpetuation, preservation, and promotion of the art of hula and the Hawaiian culture. Tickets for the hula competition are very limited, so it’s doubtful you can purchase any now. However, the competition can be viewed live Thursday, April 9 through Saturday, April 11, on local channel K5. Hilo is a hotbed of arts and crafts fairs during the festival, great for supporting Hawai`i’s artisans. The fairs take place at the auditorium and Butler Building, Wednesday, April 8 to Friday, April 10, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, April 11, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Find more information at merriemonarch.com. The Hawaiʻi Island Chamber of Commerce began the festival in 1963, and the private Merrie Monarch Festival community organization took on the responsibilities of running the event five years later.

EVENTS
The fragrance of chocolate will be everywhere at the annual Big Island Chocolate Festival, held April 23-25 at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott in Waikoloa Beach Resort. The Kohala Coast festival celebrates the cacao industry, the flavors of chocolate, and the community that supports cacao growing and processing in Hawai`i. Take part in a seminar about cacao growing and processing, go on a farm tour, or attend the festive evening gala where chocolate creations, both sweet and savory, rule. A competition amongst both local chefs and college culinary students will determine who can create the best sweet and savory chocolate bites. In its 13th year, the celebration of chocolate is presented by the non-profit Kona Cacao Association (KCA). A general admission gala ticket is $109; early bird tickets are available for a limited time for $95. VIP entry includes early entry, reserved seating, and exclusive savory options paired with specialty drinks for $179. Also available are specially priced event room packages at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort. Educational activities and prices will be announced on the website closer to the dates. All event tickets and room packages are sold online, and additional tax and ticketing fees apply. Details: bigislandchocolatefestival.com.
