DID YOU KNOW?
King David Kalākaua was a passionate patron of the arts, especially music and dance, earning him the beloved nickname "The Merrie Monarch." As the last king of the Hawaiian monarchy, he championed a revival of Hawaiian culture, advocating for a renewed sense of pride in language, traditions, and heritage. His deep appreciation for storytelling led him to author Legends and Myths of Hawaiʻi, preserving the cherished moʻolelo (stories) passed down by the kūpuna (elders) of his time. Beyond his cultural contributions, Kalākaua was a visionary leader who sought knowledge from around the world to advance Hawaiʻi and empower its people. His historic journey across the globe—unprecedented for a Hawaiian monarch—reflected his forward-thinking approach, blending innovation with tradition. His reign is widely recognized as the first Hawaiian Renaissance, laying the foundation for the vibrant resurgence of Hawaiian identity that continues today.
